John Barnes Mayofascial Release

What is Mayofascial Release?

Mayofascial release is a manual therapy utilizing slow, sustained, pressure to restore postural balance to the body. Unlike therapeutic massage which works locally in the muscles, Myofascial Release engages the fascia which is a global network of tissue.

How does Mayofascial Release work?

Fascia is a continuous web of connective tissue that weaves throughout the body, surrounding and holding every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve fiber and muscle in place. Not only does fascia provide internal structure; it has nerves that make it almost as sensitive as skin, thus it functions as a proprioceptive organ helping everything function better. When it’s healthy it is slippery and smooth. When it’s stressed it gets thick, sticky, dehydrated, tightens up and can cause pain and dysfunction.

What to expect

Myofascial Release is performed laying down on a treatment table and can be done alone or combined with other modalities. Skin to skin contact is required so the patient should be clothed in comfortable clothing such as shorts and a tank top. A standing postural assessment is used for evaluation to identify areas of pulling and postural deviations.

Once these areas are identified the therapist will use their hands to create tension in the fascia and hold for 3-5 minutes as the fascia melts and unwinds.

What does Mayofascial Release feel like?

The movements of myofascial release treatments have been compared to a piece of taffy that gentle stretches,  gradually softens, lengthens, and unwinds. As a patient you may experience a variety of signs of tissues release. The following are experiences some of my patients have reported during session:

A deep sense of relaxation

Sensations in the body other than where the therapist is working

Spontaneous unwinding of tissue, limbs moving or jerking movements

Increased digestion and tummy noises

Increased heat or coolness

Redness in the skin

Somatoemotional Release, releasing as crying, laughing etc.

In session your body begins a process on the table that will continue for days or weeks after.

I will invite you to continue to support your body through this process by being gentle with yourself and properly hydrating. Physical exertion is not recommended post treatment.
